The inaugural amalgamated sale of females on behalf of these two breeds resulted in a fantastic number of sheep forward, many of which were either dispersals or reductions and provided buyers with the choice and confidence in quality to attend from near and far as well as make use of Marteye. The Suffolk’s were first up with their 28th Annual Show and Sale on behalf of the West Country Suffolk Sheep Association which sold to a packed ring of buyers and solid trade with all but three finding new homes right across the West Country. A stand out run of in-lamb shearlings from Darren Stephens of Holsworthy picked up both the Champion and reserve rosettes in the presale show which was ably judged by Martin Pearse of North Huish. It was the reserve Champion who topped the sale when it rose to 1400gns (£1470) to Marion Elsworthy of Chulmleigh whilst the Champion sold at 1000gns (£1050) to Ross Kent of Cheltenham and others from this good home sold at 800gns, 700gns & 550gns three times. In lamb older ewes to 500gns for Brandon Roth of Redruth who also had two shearlings at the same money, Andy & Wendy Reed of Blackborough also selling shearlings at 500gns twice as Arthur Brown and Gillian Beckley of Templecombe sold their older ewes to 500gns and shearlings to 450gns and Guy Goldring of Ashburton selling shearlings to 380 & 350gns. Suffolk ewe lambs peaked at 450gns again for Arthur Brown and Gillian Beckly when purchased by Laura Monk of Truro with Phillip Brooks travelling down from Yeovil to sell his ewe lambs at 400gns twice and 380gns. Stephen Pierce of Bristol dispersed his Suffolk ewe lambs to tops of 350gns, 340gns twice and 280gns twice, likewise John Edwards of Yarnscombe parted with his ewe lambs after dispersing his ewes with us earlier in the year to tops of 240gns, 220gns and 200gns x3.
