The Welsh “Rhaeadr” takes home the spoils.
Date: Thursday 20th June 2024
Judge: A Gault, Forkins Flock
Blessed with excellent showing weather the Royal Highland Show 2024 saw the Suffolk classes judging commence at 9.00am on Thursday the first day of the show and what a show we witnessed.
Breeders were out in force from many parts of the country displaying their wares in one of the highlights of the show season under the experienced Judge Alistair Gault (Forkins Flock) from Northern Ireland.
The Overall Champion for 2024 was a strong Gimmer coming out top in her class bred by Myfyr Evans Rhaeadr flock travelling up from Wales to take home the sash. A standout female in some very big classes she was the choice of the judge on the day. It was a show to remember, making it well worth the trip from Wales by taking first place in the Ewe lamb and Group of three classes.
Overall Champion, [A12:23:02667] an ET derived female by Dunfell Dynamite TCK:22:00152 daughter out of a Lakeview Dam JFF:20:01296 born 24/12/2022 was a standout sheep on the day in a very classy field.
Pyeston Phoenix [LVL:22:00849] sired by Limestone Marksman the two Shear ram who’s ET brother sold for 32,000 and his Dam was sired by Castleisle Capaldi and was Scottish National Champion in 2023.
The spectators around the packed ring saw some incredible sheep with a very high standard on show. It was quite a spectacle when the Shearling Gimmer class came in with 27 entries showing. It’s a great sign that the breed is moving forward with lots of investment in the female lines.
The chat around the ring was lots of new faces and plenty of well-known breeders from other breeds looking at the classes and enquiries on the lines afterwards about sourcing Suffolk breeding stock.
Congratulations to all the exhibitors taking home the spoils and to the Scottish Branch for turning out in force to make sure that everyone was fed, watered and entertained on the lines after the show.
Matthew Gray Langside Flock went on to win reserve overall Young Handler at the Show. Well done Matthew, great to see our NextGen coming through strong!
