Suffolks firmly in the spotlight at the Great Yorkshire Show 2024.

Date: 10th July 2024

Judge: Mr A Evans, Dol-lys Flock, Powys

Torrential rain marred the first day of the Great Yorkshire show where the heavens opened for most of the day with only brief respites where the rain steadied up to what can only be described as a downpour! Fortunately for the Suffolk exhibitors our judging was to commence at 9.00am on the Wednesday which was somewhat brighter but still intermittently inclement throughout the judging.

The Judge our vice chair of Council Andrew Evans from the Dol-lys flock in Powys, Wales was in charge in the ring and discharged his duty in admirable fashion in front of an often packed ringside. Assisted by the Great Yorkshire Stewards who did a sterling job and kept the classes and championships moving along well.

A tremendous show of Suffolk sheep was on display giving many around the ring a chance to see what Suffolks are all about. It was a year of the females when yet again a Shearling Suffolk ewe took the Overall Championship.

The sheep of the year at the Great Yorkshire show was WPT:23:00245 brought to the show by Alastair Jackson who owns the Topgun Flock, Maulcastle Farm, Cummertrees Annan Dumfriesshire  a registered female purchased privately from the Sharps flock to add to the impressive list of genetics within the flock.

Overall Champion First Prize Gimmer A Jackson

An ET derived Lamb her sire was Lakeview Logie from a Sharps dam leading to the outstanding female being added to the Topgun flock.

The Judges choice was further verified as she went on to take the overall MV accredited show Interbreed Champion and came reserve overall champion in the full interbreed putting Suffolks firmly in the spotlight on the honours list at the Great Yorkshire 2024.

Overall Reserve First Prize Ewe Lamb Miss J Tooze

The reserve Champion was the ewe lamb exhibited by Mrs Jill Tooze, from the Spittal Flock, Howeburn House, Carnwath Lancashire making the journey across from Red Rose county and raiding the spoils at the Yorkshire!
