Show Judge: Mr Pat Machray, Society President, Middlemuir Flock

The show and sale was held on the 26th and 27th July 2024 and as tradition goes a dinner and presentation of the trophies was held on the evening before the sale. Catering company ‘Snap Crackle & Pork’ ensured everyone was well fed and still talking about the food the next day!

As tradition again goes the incumbent President of the Suffolk Sheep Society stands judge at the National this year’s honour was bestowed on Pat Machray (Middlemuir) who took on the challenge head on and did a great job of getting through the classes in good time.

Well done to Jed and Benni Sharp (Sharps)for an outstanding performance at the show where they managed to take home most of the spoils with Male Champion, Female Champion and overall, Champion for 2024 with the judge very much liking what they had put forward.

Their male champion lot no 199 – WPT:24:00387 going on to become overall champion a ram lamb sired by Sportsmans Striker out of a Hawshill dam with a pedigree that is littered with prominent prefixes including Salopian, Stockton and Strathbogie being a mix that caught the judges eye. The lamb went on to be sold to Ali Jacksons Topgun flock in Dumfries at the 4-way joint equal top price on the day of 10,000gns. Taking the Walton cup for overall champion, the Society Cup for male champion, and the Venning cup for the best single ram lamb

Reserve Champion male selected by the Judge was consigned by James Inness (Strathbogie) Lot 47, SUT:20:24:08461 sired by last year’s highest price at 30,000gns Rempstone Gambler. The single ET lamb who’s dam was their show ewe lamb, and her grandam was the Highland Show Champion in 2018 went on to the sale to become equal top price on the day at 7,000gns. The Sharps were successful again in the female judging the judge tapping out Shearling ewe lot no 4 WPT:23:00311 sired by Lakeview Logie from a dam that was purchased from Salopian. She was a very strong and correct shearling ewe and stood first in her class going on to take the Quinton Clarke Cup for the female Champion for 2024. She went on to top the Shearling trade at 5000gns going to her new postcode at Claire Kenyon’s Redacre flock.

The sale commenced at 10:30am on Saturday 27th July in the very able hands of Lyndon Trumper, Straker Chadwick and James Evans, Halls sharing the rostrum.

It turned out to be an indifferent sale with no big single numbers but a spread across the consignors with 4 ram lambs reaching 10,000gns. Ram lamb averages were £1443.04

David and Paula Reid (Conchar) were very much in the mix when Jed Sharp went to the top of the shop for their lot number 123, which was a sub in the catalogue JDX:24:01721 taking the joint top price at the sale for 10000gns. This naturally served twin lamb by Claycrop Classic out of a home bred dam. Paternal grand parents including Sportsmans Masterplan and Limestone and maternal Roundacre Rolls Royce took the fancy of Jed and Benni Sharp to join the Sharps flock. A good day at the office for the Reids!
