NUMBER ONE FOR FINISHING
This study comes on the back of the interim results of the Ramcompare* project which
identified that:
• SUFFOLKS remain the number one terminal sire for maximis-
ing growth rates, hitting early market prices and reducing the
cost of extra days on the farm.
• SUFFOLKS consistently outperform other terminal sires in
muscle depths across the loin highlighting the natural carcass
balance of the Suffolk is weighted towards the higher valued
cuts.
• SUFFOLKS have higher fat levels compared to continental
breeds tested. This coupled with extra growth rates demon-
strate that Suffolk sired lambs will finish faster that other
terminal sire breeds.
NUMBER ONE FOR THE INDUSTRY
The Suffolk is the leading domestic terminal sire breed in the UK and Ireland and has
been one of the central pillars to the lamb and sheepmeat industry since the middle of
the 18th Century. Suffolk Sheep Society Chief Executive, Robin McIlrath, said:
“These tests prove what we always knew, Suffolk sired
lambs deliver what the red meat industry needs, fast fin-
ishing, great muscle depth and an end product that gives a
first class tasting experience.”
